Columnist Scores at Colorado Press Women
Grace Notes wins six awards, including two first-place
By Greg Campbell
You wouldn't have known it reading the Coloradoan over the weekend, but Natalie Costanza-Chavez's Grace Notes column won that newspaper several awards this weekend from Colorado Press Women, including two first place honors.
Grace Notes won first place for opinion/editorial, and first, third and three honorable mention awards for personal columns, a virtual sweep of the category. The two first-place winning entries are automatically entered into the National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest to be held in Richmond, Va, in September. All of the articles entered in the contest ran in the Coloradoan.
In a short article in Sunday's paper, the Coloradoan detailed the accomplishments of its other winners, but did not mention Costanza-Chavez.
Joyce Davis, the Coloradoan lifestyle editor, wrote in an email that a future article will detail all Northern Colorado winners, not just current Coloradoan staff.
Grace Notes ran in the Coloradoan for the past three years, but was picked up by the Fort Collins Weekly in March after a disagreement between Coloradoan editors and Costanza-Chavez over changes proposed to the column's length and publication schedule.
"How does it feel to win? Humbling," Costanza-Chavez wrote in an email. "I still find the fact that people read what I write an honor, and, frankly, right before I fall asleep, it can also be a horror of what-do-you-think-you're-doing? But when I wake up, hugely understated, I feel lucky."
In 2006, Costanza-Chavez won first place, two second places and an honorable mention from Colorado Press Women.
